Along with thousands of other educators across Scotland, I help create engineering graduates that are fit for purpose and able to take on future challenges. But how do we go about developing engineers for an unknown future, in a fast moving world where we really don’t know what next week’s challenge will be, let alone in the next five years? According to OPITO’s 2019 Skills Landscape Report, by 2025 there will be approximately 4,500 new people employed in roles that do not currently exist. These new roles will require a different set of skills and competences, which means an emphasis on killing and upskilling the existing workforce. Opinion Piece for Press and Journal

I was asked to write something for University Mental Health Day so took the opportunity to write about the project I am working on with our Student Life department, the School of Engineering and the School of Computing. I'm really hopeful that the project works well for students but we are still in very early days! Opinion Piece on Mental Wellbeing in Engineering  or see below  “Why didn’t they reach out?”  In the aftermath of the death of a student, that is the question people ask over and over. The impact of this kind of loss is immeasurable and, in UK, the equivalent of 1 student every 4 days dies by suicide.  The thing is, when you are so low, and in so much pain, reaching out, for many, is too hard, too shameful, too painful, that it simply doesn’t happen.
